Shreveport native Sam Burns in one shot off the lead going into Sunday’s final round of the Masters in Augusta, Ga.
The former Calvary Baptist and LSU star shot a 4-under 68 in the third round at Augusta National Saturday. He is at 10 under after shooting a 67 in the first round and a 71 in the second. Defending champion Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young are tied for the lead at 11 under.
McIlroy started the day with a six-stroke lead. He was even par for the day after the front nine. But he ran into trouble on the back nine with a double bogey on the 11th and bogeys on the 12th and 17th. He finished with a 1-over 73.
Young, who was eight strokes back when the day began, shot a 65.
Burns got of to a strong start with birdies at No. 1 and No. 2. After making eight straight pars, he made birdied the 11th and 13th.
Burns is paired with Shane Lowry, who is at 9 under, in the second-to-last group Sunday. They are scheduled to tee off at 1:14 p.m.
Burns, 29, is making his fifth start in the Masters. His best finish was a tie for 29th in 2023. His best finish in a major is a tie for seventh at last year’s U.S. Open.
He has won five times on the PGA Tour. According to his PGA Tour bio, he and his wife, former Byrd track star Caroline (nee Campbell), reside in Choudrant but he plays from Shreveport.
