Flooding prompted major freeway closures Wednesday across Milwaukee County on Wednesday evening, April 15, with authorities warning drivers to stay off the roads if possible.

What we know:

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said all southbound lanes of I-43 are closed at Becher due to flooding, with a full northbound closure at Holt expected.

Officials warned that conditions could worsen and advised drivers who must travel to plan ahead and use caution.

Additional closures are now in place at I-43 and Mitchell, and both directions near the Stadium Interchange on Brewers Boulevard.

Campus safety

Marquette University police also issued multiple alerts warning of dangerous conditions near campus. Authorities told people not to drive near 15th and Kilbourn due to flooding and urged caution across the area.

In a separate alert, Marquette police said flooding continued around campus and urged people to stay inside, avoid standing water and not drive through flooded areas, directing students to check email for updates.

Officials warned that conditions could worsen and advised drivers who must travel to plan ahead.

City spokesperson Jeff Fleming said crews are out across the city to address street flooding. People can report street flooding locations by calling 414-286-CITY.
