For the first time in the 10-year run of the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era, the San Francisco 49ers moved out of of first round of the NFL Draft on the night of the draft, thanks to back-to-back trades.

The 49ers traded their first-round pick (No. 27 overall) and a fourth-round pick (No. 138) to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 30 overall pick and a third-round pick at No. 90 overall. But once Pick No. 30 came on the clock, the 49ers made yet another trade, dealing that pick to the New York Jets for Pick No. 33 — the first pick of the second round — and a late fifth-round pick (No. 179).

The Niners haven’t made a trade during the draft to exit the first round since 1988, when San Francisco dealt the No. 25 overall pick to the Los Angeles Raiders for their second-round pick at pick No. 33, their fourth-round pick at No. 102 and wide receiver Dokie Williams.

General manager John Lynch telegraphed the move in a news conference on Monday, noting that San Francisco had just six picks in this year’s draft — a first-round pick, a second-round pick and four picks in the fourth round.

“Now, I will tell you we don’t have a ton of picks in this draft, so it does make some sense to where, ‘How can we find some more picks?’” Lynch said. “And we’ll certainly be open to that.”

The last three times the 49ers went through the first round of the draft without a pick, they had dealt those picks away in order to move up for a higher selection. In 1995, the 49ers traded the No. 30 pick at the end of the first round, plus a third-rounder and fourth-rounder in 1995 and their 1996 first-round pick, to the Cleveland Browns to move up to No. 10. San Francisco took wide receiver J.J. Stokes after that deal. The other move was the now-infamous Trey Lance trade from 2021, when the 49ers traded their No. 12 pick in the first round, along with first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 and a third-round pick in 2022, to the Miami Dolphins to acquire the No. 3 overall pick and take Lance.

Since Shanahan and Lynch took over in 2017, the 49ers have traded down twice in the first round, but in each instance, they moved back a single selection — from No. 2 to No. 3 in 2017 and from No. 13 to No. 14 in 2020. They’ve otherwise been known for their aggressive trades to move up in the draft, doing that three times (for second first-round picks in 2017 and in 2020 and the aforementioned 2021 trade for Lance).

Before Thursday night, the 49ers had traded down twice in the first round since head coach Kyle Shanahan and Lynch took over in 2017, but in each instance, they moved back a single selection — from No. 2 to No. 3 in 2017, and from No. 13 to No. 14 in 2020.
