WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) — A video circulating online is drawing concern in West Warwick after it appeared to show a person walking overnight through the center of town wearing what looks like a white robe and pointed hood.

The video, captured around 2 a.m. Monday near the Main Street gazebo, shows the individual walking alone.

Ryan Fitzgerald said he was in the car with his brother when the video was recorded.

“We were like, what the hell is that?” Fitzgerald said. “And then we literally booked it out of there.”

Fitzgerald said the moment became more unsettling when the person appeared to look directly at them.

“Honestly, me and Sean were just like, ‘holy crap like, I gotta get the hell out of here,’” he said.

The video has since spread across social media, prompting reaction from people in the community.

“It’s weird because I know there’s racism around here, but not like that,” said Fitzgerald. “That’s a whole different level.”

A nearby business also captured the person on surveillance video.

Leslie Letourneau, owner of Candy’s Curiosities & Vintage, said seeing the figure outside her shop was upsetting.

“It was really upsetting to think somebody would walk around like that period anywhere and then it felt personal when it was in my store or in front of my store,” Letourneau said.

Letourneau said her store is meant to be a welcoming space for all customers.

“I want every one of them to feel safe when they come in every time,” she said.

She said she contacted police after reviewing her surveillance footage.

“They did say they were investigating but other than that I haven’t heard anything else,” Letourneau said.

Town officials confirmed police are aware of the video and are looking into it.

On Wednesday, the department acknowledged the video publicly and said it appeared to be isolated.

Police also said there is no known threat to public safety.
