Michael Olise scored a sublime curling strike after Harry Kane missed a penalty to give Bayern Munich a narrow Bundesliga victory and pile pressure on relegation-threatened Wolfsburg.
The already-crowned champions were second best for most of the contest and appeared lethargic in the aftermath of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final loss to Paris St-Germain.
Wolfsburg are third bottom in the table – in the relegation play-off spot – and only ahead of St Pauli on goal difference and three points clear of 18th-placed Heidenheim.
But they dominated against Vincent Kompany’s men and had 17 attempts on goal, while Kane missed a 35th-minute penalty for the visitors after Olise was fouled in the box by Konstantinos Koulierakis.
The England captain had scored all nine of his previous spot-kicks in the Bundesliga this season, but slipped slightly as he took this one and blasted the ball wide.
Christian Eriksen, Denis Vavro and Patrick Wimmer all came close for Wolfsburg before the break, forcing fine saves from Jonas Urbig, but they were unable to match Bayern’s intensity after the restart.
Olise broke the deadlock in the 56th minute with an outstanding finish after cutting in from the right and bending the ball over Wolfsburg keeper Kamil Grabara.
Mattias Svanberg had the chance to net a late leveller and earn a crucial point for the Wolves with two minutes remaining, but his strike rattled the right post.
Defeat meant Wolfsburg’s fight to avoid automatic relegation will now come down to a blockbuster final game of the season at St Pauli.
Victory would give Dieter-Klaus Hecking’s side a second chance at survival through the relegation-promotion play-off.
