Jessica Pegula stunned the Italian Open crowd on Sunday, defeating Rebecca Masarova 6-0, 6-0 in the BNP Paribas Arena.
Pegula defeated her Swiss opponent in just one hour, breaking Masarova’s serve five times on her way to victory in the Italian capital.
It was a historic victory for Pegula, who had never before ‘double-bagelled’ an opponent on the WTA Tour.

With victory over Rebecca Masarova on Sunday, Jessica Pegula has won 112 WTA 1000 matches.
As per statisticians OptaAce, Jessica Pegula is now the American with the second-most main draw wins in WTA-1000 events since the format’s introduction in 2009, equalling Venus Williams’ total of 112 WTA 1000 wins.
Remarkably, only Serena Williams has won more WTA 1000 matches since 2009. The American star, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, won 148 WTA 1000 matches before her retirement in September 2022.

Pegula will overtake Venus’ total if she wins her round of 32 match against Anastasia Potapova.
Potapova, the world number 38, recently reached the Madrid Open final, defeating Jelena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina en route.
The Austrian, who has come through qualifying in Rome, has already defeated Irina-Camelia Begu, Nikola Bartunkova, Dalma Galfi, Karolina Muchova and Liudmila Samsonova.

Pegula improves upon her 2025 performance
By defeating Masarova on Sunday, Jessica Pegula has already gained WTA ranking points.
Last year, Pegula was defeated in the round of 32 by 25th seed Elise Mertens. As a result, she earned 65 WTA ranking points.
This year, Pegula has guaranteed herself a further 55 ranking points by reaching the round of 16.
