PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Authorities rescued eight severely malnourished dogs from a Port St. Lucie home after receiving a crucial tip, leading to the arrest of two people on multiple counts of animal cruelty.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department said that officers and Animal Control officers conducted an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip on April 20, regarding concerns about multiple dogs living in deplorable conditions.

Officers responded to the home on the 300 block of NW Biltmore Street, where they said they found eight dogs that were severely dehydrated, malnourished, and suffering from flea infestations and hookworms.

The report states that the animals had been living in unsanitary conditions filled with urine and feces, and many were significantly underweight and in distress.

Officials even noted that some dogs were observed trying to drink condensation from an air conditioning drain line, highlighting their desperate need for water.

After the dogs were rescued, they were taken to a local animal hospital, where veterinary staff allegedly confirmed that their conditions reflected ongoing neglect and a lack of proper care.

As a result of the investigation, 36-year-old Joseph Calafiore and 33-year-old Alexandria Fiorenza were arrested, each facing eight counts of animal cruelty.

Port St. Lucie police, along with their veterinary partners, expressed gratitude to the individual who reported the situation, stating that their actions helped save the lives of the dogs.

All eight dogs are now receiving the necessary medical care, nutritious meals, baths, and plenty of love.
