NC wildlife officers ramp up waterway patrols for Memorial Day weekend

  • maio 22, 2026

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is increasing patrols on waterways this Memorial Day weekend as millions travel by road, air, and boat to celebrate the holiday.

NC Wildlife Resources Commission Officer Lee Perry said the agency sees more water traffic during holidays. Officers stop many people driving a boat while impaired and many people riding a jet ski too close to the back of a boat, which can be dangerous.

Officials will be out this holiday weekend stopping boats to make sure they are following the law and have the proper equipment while on the water, such as lifejackets, fishing licenses, fire extinguishers, and more.

Last year, Officer Perry said there were 138 boat-related incidents, with 25 being deadly. The agency is looking to curb that number this year and is asking everyone to be smart on the water.

“If you’re going to have drinking involved in your plans, I highly recommend at least having a designated driver just so everything’s good, and nobody’s gonna get in trouble and to be safe out there on the water,” Perry said.

According to Officer Perry, the consequences of driving while intoxicated could include going to jail, paying a $250 penalty fee, and more.

The campaign will involve both on-the-road and water checks, in partnership with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, to ensure everyone is following the rules while soaking up the long weekend.

Local sheriff and police departments are also part of the campaign to help keep everyone safe this weekend.
