Texas softball pulled out a dramatic 4-3 win over Arizona State in Game 2 of the Austin Super Regional against Arizona State at McCombs Field on Saturday in order to keep its dreams of a second straight national championship alive.
Now, the No. 6 Longhorns (46-11) and No. 19 Arizona State (45-17) meet in a third and decisive game Sunday in order to determine a spot in next week’s Women’s College World Series.

Texas slugger Katie Stewart lines a single into center field that just eludes a diving Kaylee Pond, and Ashton Maloney and Jaycie Nichols both cross home plate. But Texas leaves the bags juiced after Leighann Goode grounds out to third to end the inning. The Longhorns entered the inning without a hit against Kenzie Brown; they had four in the frame.

The Sun Devils are getting some contact against Texas ace Teagan Kavan but haven’t scored. Emily Schepp and Yannixa Acuna smack back-to-back one-out hits, which helps prompt a visit from pitching coach Pattie Ruth Taylor. Kavan then walks Tiare Ho-Ching to load the bags with two outs but gets a soft groundout from Tanya Windle to end the frame.

Texas coach Mike White will start ace Teagan Kavan for the third straight game while Arizona State coach Megan Bartlett will start ace Kenzie Brown for the second time this series after she picked up a complete-game win in Game 1. Kavan only threw two innings in Game 2 and gave up two runs and three hits while Brown tossed three innings in Game 2 and allowed five hits and two earned runs. For the season, Kavan is 24-5 with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP and has 225 strikeouts and 54 walks in 188⅓ innings. Brown is 18-7 with a 2.22 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. She has 261 strikeouts and 74 walks in 163⅔ innings.
The winner of Game 3 between Texas and Arizona State will join Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, UCLA and Nebraska at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. There are two other Game 3s today, including Texas Tech at Florida and Oklahoma hosting Mississippi State.
