Novak Djokovic will tackle the intense afternoon heat of the French Open on Wednesday as the 24-time grand slam champion battles Valentin Royer in his second-round match.

Djokovic, 39, has been handed the third match of the day on Court Philippe-Chatrier so may face the hottest part of the day as temperatures at the tournament continue to soar.

The third seed may have preferred the night session, which he featured in on Sunday in his win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, but that slot has been allocated to Alexander Zverev for his match with Tomas Machac.

Djokovic recovered from losing the opening set against the big-serving Mpetshi Perricard and will face another Frenchman in Royer, the 24-year-old who is ranked 74th in the world.

They will take to court following the women’s singles matches involving four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek and the current Rome champion and seventh seed Elina Svitolina earlier on Wednesday.

When is Djokovic playing at French Open?

Djokovic will be playing in the third match on Court Philippe-Chatrier, with play underway at 11am BST (UK time).

Four-time champion Iga Swiatek has a habit of quick victories in Paris and will be the overwhelming favourite against Sara Bejlek.

Elina Svitolina required a marathon three-set match to beat Anna Bondar but has a more favourable match-up against Kaitlin Quevedo.

Djokovic, therefore, could be on court by 2pm BST, although it could be slightly later or earlier depending on the previous matches.
