President Donald Trump says he will recognize Welles Crowther, who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Crowther, a Boston College alum, died as he helped people escape the World Trade Center’s South Tower after it was hit by a hijacked airplane.
Crowther wore a red bandana on his face, which is on display at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Every September, BC honors Crowther with a red bandana game, and it holds a 5K in his memory every October.
Trump announced that he was giving Crowther America’s highest civilian honor during a speech in Crowther’s native Rockland County, New York, on Friday. He called Crowther’s mother to the stage after announcing the award.
