Casper Ruud vs Hamad Medjedovic

(Approx. Thursday 12am AEST)

Casper Ruud was on the absolute brink in round 1. He was cramping, and could barely move against Roman Safiullin. Fortunately for one of the tournament favourites (outside of Sinner), his opponent was also struggling physically, allowing him to claim the fifth set and progress in what looks a decent draw for the Norwegian. It wasn’t his best performance in recent times, but there is certainly room for improvement.

Ruud’s recent clay form tells an interesting story. Over the last 10 matches on clay, it does seem as though he has turned a corner, perhaps back towards levels we have seen in the past which included making the final of this tournament in the Rafael Nadal era. However, he has been able to do it whilst underperforming on break point saves and break point conversion when comparing to his splits and averages over 12/24/36 months. So there is actually room for improvement given the fact he has lifted his level and managed to do so while underperforming in key match moments compared to what we’d come to expect.

Hamad Medjedovic has certainly lifted his level and consistency, however there are still some question marks over him needing to redline for long periods and play some low percentage tennis to win. The impressive thing for him is he is pulling it off, however there is a much higher quality player across the net today capable of causing some significant issues for the Serbian. His ability to use the dropshot and move his opponents around the court work better against others, but I am not sure it will have the same effectiveness against Ruud here.

To me, if we see a Ruud that is able to play to the end of the match, I have him covering the -4.5 games available more often than not. This looks to be a decent spot in the late afternoon conditions.
