The Paramount+ series, co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, returned for its 10-episode second season in November and aired weekly until mid-January. Over its first two seasons, the show primarily filmed in and around Fort Worth.
Thornton previously said that filming on the third go-around will begin in late August.
Now, in a recent conversation with Variety, he offered a glimpse into what fans can expect in the new season.
Sheridan serves as the main writer on Landman and likes to keep things close to the vest, Thornton said.
For Season 1, the cast had all 10 scripts to dive into before cameras rolled. For Season 2, they only had about half the scripts by the time filming began and received the rest in real time.
Thornton said he loves that Sheridan doesn’t tell the cast everything until the last minute.
“Because in real life, you don’t know what’s gonna happen next,” Thornton told Variety.
When it came to his best guess for Season 3, Thornton reiterated multiple times that he does not have any inside information.
However, his assumption is that Season 3 will be a combination of the first two seasons. Season 1 had tension and danger, while Season 2 is more about the oil business and his character’s wacky family.
“I have a feeling that that’s what it’s gonna be,” Thornton said. “It’s gonna be a very even combo of both of those seasons. And I promise you, no one told me that.”
Landman is described as a “modern-day tale of fortune seeking in the world of West Texas oil rigs.”
“As oil rises from the earth, so do secrets -– and Tommy Norris’ (Thornton) breaking point may be closer than he realizes. Facing mounting pressure from M-Tex Oil, Cami Miller (Demi Moore), and the shadow of his kin, survival in West Texas isn’t noble –- it’s brutal. And sooner or later something’s got to break,” the show’s Season 2 synopsis reads.
In addition to the previously mentioned cast, Landman stars Sam Elliott, Ali Larter, Andy Garcia, Paulina Chávez, Jacob Lofland, Kayla Wallace, James Jordan, Colm Feore and Mark Collie.
