Rijeka’s players played 0-0 against Cypriot AEK Larnaca in the 4th round of the Conference League as hosts at the Rujevica stadium.
After a convincing victory against Hajduk five days ago, the team from Rijeka failed to find a solution for the “bunker” of the Cypriot team, which arrived in Rijeka with the sole intention of playing 0-0. This is evidenced by the fact that AEK only had one shot on target during the entire match, while Rijeka hit AEK’s goal six times, but the best player of the match was the guest goalkeeper Alomerović.
Rijeka created their first chance in the 31st minute when Fruk fought his way to a shot from 14 meters, but Alomerović reacted brilliantly. About ten minutes later, Vignato attempted a low shot from the edge of the penalty area, but Alomerović was again on the spot.
At the start of the second half, the crowd at Rujevica was left speechless when Bajić headed Waldo’s cross into the net, but a review of the video showed that the visiting striker was in a small backfield.
By the end of the match, Rijeka was close to scoring twice more, in the 66th minute Fruk shot from distance, while in the 70th minute Majstorović crossed from the back, but again Alomerović was up to the task.
With this point, Rijeka has reached a five-point advantage and is in 24th place in the standings, while AEK has reached eight points and holds seventh position. Interestingly, AEK has not yet conceded a goal in this competition.
By the end of the Conference League, Rijeka will host Celje in two weeks, while in three weeks they will be guests of Shakhtar.
