Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been granted Albanian citizenship and issued an Albanian passport.

The decision was approved through a special decree by the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj.

No further details have yet been made public regarding the reasons or procedures behind the granting of citizenship.

According to the decree, Adams obtained Albanian citizenship upon his own request. He previously visited Albania in October 2025, where he met with Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Adams has also expressed admiration for Albania and its people in the past, during his tenure as mayor of New York City.
