An Amber Alert about a missing 3-month-old boy believed to be taken by an unknown man in Alhambra was deactivated after the baby was found safe Friday, police said.

The alert — issued by the California Highway Patrol — was released after police received a call about a possible carjacking near Hampden Terrace and Sherwood Avenue around 5:25 p.m., according to the Alhambra Police Department.

Police told NBC Los Angeles the child’s mother left a black Honda Civic running and her child in the backseat while she went into a house for an unknown amount of time. When she came out, she saw that the car was gone.

The suspect, described as a man who is not related to the family, drove off with the boy inside, prompting Alhambra police to activate the Amber Alert around 7 p.m., the department said.

About a half-hour later, South Pasadena police were notified that the Honda Civic was possibly spotted on Brent Avenue. There, the car was found running with the air conditioning on, and the child was inside safe and unharmed, officials said. The boy was evaluated by medics and reunited with his family.

As of Friday night, the alleged car thief and kidnapper has not been taken into custody. He is described by police as a 5-foot-10 man in his 30s with black hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing a black shirt, blue or black pants and a black backpack.

Investigators say they believe the kidnapping was random and that they don’t think the suspect knew there was a baby inside the car when he took it.

Alhambra police are asking people who live in the area to check their security cameras for footage of the incident or suspect.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information arrives.
