Former Louisville football quarterback Browning Nagle has died, the university announced on Friday in a social media post.

Nagle, who played quarterback for the Cardinals from 1989-1991, was 57 years old.

“We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great,” the X post from the UofL football account said. “His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and teammates during this difficult time.”

Nagle, who transfer to UofL from West Virginia, led the Cardinals to a 34-7 win over Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl. The Florida native finished his college career with 4,653 passing yards and 32 touchdowns. He was selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.

Nagle spent five years in the NFL, which included a stop with the Indianapolis Colts (1994) and Atlanta Falcons (1996).
