Colman Domingo's Story of How He Met His Husband is Romcom-Worthy

It’s official: Romantic comedies have nothing on Colman Domingo’s amazing story of how he met his husband. It’s like something out of a real-life, modern-day fairytale.

During a February 2024 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the actor — who will make his Saturday Night Live hosting debut on April 11 — told his own unbelievable tale of happenstance, meet-cutes, and true love. Trust us, it’s enough to bring tears to your eyes.

The 56-year-old and his husband, Raúl, have been married since 2014, and hearing Domingo recall how they first met is just so inspiring.

While walking into a Berkeley, California, Walgreens to shop for a face mask, Domingo noticed someone “beautiful” — Raúl — walking out. According to Domingo, the two kept making eye contact, but nothing came of it.

The mutual attraction seemed to be there, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be, Domingo thought.

“I [was] just dumbfounded,” Domingo remembered about the incident.

The star checked his watch — 8:03 p.m. — and immediately told himself to be back at the same place at the same time the next week, just in case the mystery man was as intrigued as he was. (“I’m that kind of hopeless romantic,” Domingo confessed.)

But that’s when the story gets even wilder.

“Cut to three days later, I’m trying to buy a used computer,” he explained. “I was scanning Craigslist, and I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll place one of those Missed Connections ads.'”

As it turned out, somebody beat him to the punch.

“I go to page two of them as I’m reading, and I see, ‘Saw you outside of Walgreens Berkeley,'” Domingo revealed. “He placed an ad for me two hours before. I jumped up. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? That’s me.’ He described me with my fauxhawk — it was 2005.”

The two decided to make a date out of this delightful instance of serendipity.

“So we met up three days later, we had our first date,” he revealed. “I was trying to be a good boy and go home. He said, ‘Can you stay over?’ I said, ‘Sure but let’s just cuddle.’ We cuddled. I thought he was asleep. Four o’clock in the morning, I couldn’t sleep, and I said, ‘I think I love you and you’re about to change my life.’ And we’ve been together almost 19 years.”

You couldn’t have scripted the beginning of their love story any better.
