The Union are back at the top of the MLS charts once again. After a down 2024 season, the club rode a hot start to the 2025 campaign to stay near first place in the Eastern Conference. Thanks to five victories in a six-match span, Philadelphia clinched the Supporters’ Shield for the second time in franchise history.
Now, the Union look to their regular-season success as a deep playoff run. The last time they finished first in the East, they made it all the way to the MLS Cup Final. Philly made easy work of the Chicago Fire in the first round this year.
New York City was the only underdog to have made it out of the first round. They might have had a chance to be the higher seed heading into this matchup. However, the team dropped three of its final four games of the regular season, leading to a fifth-place finish. Yet, it was enough to get NYCFC to the postseason. Like last year, New York is the lower seed, but that did not stop them from beating Cincinnati in the first round.
This year, NYCFC got through fourth-seeded Charlotte FC in a thrilling series.
