Gunfire erupted during a large fight at the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday night, sending people running and leaving two people wounded — one of whom was the suspected shooter, authorities said.

On Monday, the Santa Monica Police Department announced that officers had arrested Jaysawn Williams, 18, of Rialto, who was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.

Police initially responded to reports of shots fired following a fight at the pier around 9 p.m. Sunday. Upon arriving, officers provided immediate medical aid to an individual suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm, who was taken to a hospital.

A second person suffered a gunshot graze wound and also was taken to a local hospital. Police later determined that this was the suspect, Williams, who after receiving medical treatment was taken into custody and taken to the Santa Monica Jail.

Witnesses told local news outlets that the shots sent people scattering as police rushed to the area. The pier was temporarily closed as authorities investigated the shooting but has since reopened to normal operations, police said Monday.

Santa Monica police said that the department maintains a regular patrol presence on the pier and is committed to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors.

The pier is one of the most popular tourist sites in Los Angeles. Originally built in 1909, the more than a century old recreation destination attracts around 10 million visitors a year, according to the pier’s theme park Pacific Park.
