The San Francisco 49ers wanted to address their defensive line and get younger and faster Monday as the NFL’s free-agency tampering period started.
They didn’t do any of those things, but they got better. They agreed to terms with Mike Evans, the likely Hall of Fame-bound receiver who is leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a dozen years.
Evans turns 33 in August and missed nine games because of injury last season — so he will fit right in — but is still an elite 50-50 ball and red zone target.
He’s also an underrated route runner who still has some speed left. He’s averaged 15.1 yards per catch over his career. Since 2023, Evans has caught 13 touchdowns when aligned as an isolated receiver, tied with Ja’Marr Chase for the most in the NFL, per Next Gen Stats, despite missing 12 games.
