LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas woman who once saw pregnant teens sleeping on the street decided no mom should face homelessness alone. Now, Kathleen Miller, founding director of Living Grace Homes, is being honored as Nevada’s 2026 Mother of Achievement.

“I was very humbled and surprised when I got the call saying that they had nominated me and the committee had chosen me,” Miller said. “But if it weren’t for Living Grace, there would not be a Mother of Achievement for me, because this has been my life for the last almost 25 years now.”

When Miller realized there was no housing in Clark County for pregnant young women facing homelessness, she decided to create it. Nearly 900 mothers and babies have now had a safe place to begin again through Living Grace Homes.

The nonprofit helps young moms with medical care, legal issues, school and jobs so they can support their families.

Miller said the nonprofit has been open for 19 years, but she spent years before that preparing, researching and figuring out what needed to be done to open Living Grace.

She said most young women have not graduated from high school when they come to Living Grace Homes.

“We can help get them re-enrolled in school and back on their feet and back on track,” she said. “We make sure that they get the medical care that they need so that we can have healthy moms and healthy babies, which leads to a healthier community.”

The nonprofit also acts as a support system even after mothers leave the program.

Crews are finishing a new campus that will add 14 emergency beds. Living Grace Homes hopes to have those beds open by July, just as dangerous summer heat arrives in Las Vegas.

Through the month of May, donations from new donors are being matched dollar for dollar by a Helms Family Grant up to $20,000 to help finish construction.
