Real Madrid subsequently fined Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni €500,000 (£432,100; $588,520) for their fight earlier in the week.

On Friday, Madrid said that the players showed “total repentance” at a disciplinary hearing and apologised to one another, as well as to the club, their teammates, the coaching staff and the fans.

The team later announced Valverde had suffered a head injury from the incident and would be out for 10 to 14 days, per medical protocols.

Both players have issued public apologies, with Tchouameni describing the events as “unacceptable”.
