WASHINGTON (7News) — The great Redskins quarterback Christian A. "Sonny" Jurgensen, III, died at age 91 on Friday, according to the Commanders.

Jurgensen was a long-time Washingtonian and spent 55 years in the city. He retired from broadcasting in 2019, according to 7News' partner WTOP.

Jurgensen was inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 1983. He retired from the game in 1974.

At the time of his retirement, Jurgensen released the following statement:

I want to thank our Redskin fans for being so generous to me and our teams, we owe it all to you. I’ve had so many wonderful memories of thousands of teammates I’ve played with and talked about during my years in radio and television in Washington D.C. I’ll always be a fan of professional football and appreciative of all that it has done for me, my family and our city.

The Washington Commanders released a statement Friday morning from Jurgensen's family:

"We are enormously proud of his amazing life and accomplishments on the field, marked not only by a golden arm, but also a fearless spirit and intellect that earned him a place among the legends in Canton. But to those of us who knew him beyond the stadium lights, he was the steady, humorous, and deeply loving heart of our family," read the statement.
