SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – MDOT says both directions of the Zilwaukee Bridge closed Friday morning due to crashes and icy conditions.
Crashes were reported on both sides of the I-75 bridge over the Saginaw River around 6:30 a.m. Southbound traffic was diverted onto I-675 at exit 155 and northbound traffic was detoured onto M-13 at exit 153.
The Saginaw Police Department also closed the northbound lanes of I-675 due to numerous crashes related to icy road conditions.
“The freezing rain has made roadways icy and difficult to navigate,” said Saginaw Police Det. Sgt. Jeffrey Doud. “Please use caution while driving and give yourself additional time to get to your destination.”
Investigators did not immediately release any information about how many vehicles were involved in the crashes or whether there were any injuries.
Freezing rain began falling in the Saginaw area early Friday morning and was slowly spreading south. Bridges often are the first parts of freeways to become icy in poor winter weather because of air flowing above and underneath them.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for nearly all of Michigan on Friday. Parts of Mid-Michigan could see up to a quarter-inch of freezing rain through Friday afternoon.
