ADRIAN, Mich. – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that 40 new jobs are coming to Lenawee County as part of an expansion project.

The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board approved plans for the Adrian Steel Company to expand its operations in Adrian, according to a release from Whitmer’s office.

“Michigan is on the move and open for business, competing for and winning big projects in industries like steel manufacturing,” said Whitmer. “Today’s announcement will create 40 good-paying jobs and cement Michigan as the best place to build the future. Let’s keep working together to create good-paying jobs, bring supply chains home from overseas, and tell Michigan’s story.”

As part of the project, the MSF Board approved a $320,000 performance-based grant through the Michigan Business Development Program.

The expansion includes a 112,000-square-foot addition to the steel company’s existing facility, creating more space for raw material storage, cutting, forming, welding, painting, assembly, office functions, and shipping operations.

The project is expected to create at least 40 new jobs over the next five years, according to the release. The company’s total investment will be $43,453,278.

To support the investment, the MSF Board also approved a five-year State Essential Services Assessment (SESA) that will fully cover certain taxes. The incentive is valued at up to $228,751 for $25,791,240 in eligible equipment and other personal property.

Additional tax relief is expected, including a property tax abatement from the City of Adrian and a State Education Tax reduction approved by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Officials said that this is the company’s largest investment since 1953.

The planned expansion represents the biggest investment Adrian Steel has made in Michigan since 1953, highlighting the company’s long-standing ties to the state and its continued belief in Michigan’s workforce, infrastructure, and future in manufacturing.

Headquartered in Adrian, the company has evolved into a nationwide leader in automotive aftermarket equipment and cargo management solutions for skilled trades, all while keeping its operations rooted in Michigan.

Beyond the economic benefits, Adrian Steel has built a strong reputation for giving back to the local community, according to the release.

The company regularly supports organizations and initiatives throughout Adrian by donating time, funding, and resources to programs that make a positive impact where its employees live and work.

Officials said this ongoing involvement reflects Adrian Steel’s commitment not just as a major employer, but as an active and responsible member of the community.

“The City of Adrian recognizes Adrian Steel Company as a valued and longstanding community partner,” said Lisa Hewitt-Cruz, community development director for the City of Adrian. “For generations, Adrian has invested in our community, provided quality employment opportunities for our residents, and contributed to the economic strength and stability of our city. We appreciate their continued commitment to our community and proudly support their ongoing success.”
