ALBANY — The New York State Bar Association honored Poughkeepsie attorney Steve Patterson on Law Day, Friday, May 1, during the 35th Annual President’s Pro Bono Service Awards in Albany. Patterson, a longtime criminal defense attorney, was among several lawyers recognized for their exceptional commitment to serving the public good.
“When we think about the American Dream and the Rule of Law, it speaks to our core mission to promote equal justice,” said New York State Bar Association President Kathleen Sweet. “On this Law Day, we recognize attorneys who ask for no compensation to take on the tough cases from the neediest clients. Lawyers from Buffalo to Albany to New York City are contributing countless pro bono hours to New Yorkers in need.”
Patterson received the Attorney Professionalism Award from the state bar association.
Known for his reserved demeanor, Patterson told Mid-Hudson News that he considers the award to be a “great honor.” Explaining what the award means to him, he said, “I have tried to practice law in a professional, respectful manner while still vigorously defending my clients. The Constitution requires that everyone be provided a defense. I am so fortunate to have been mentored by many excellent attorneys in the practice of law, including the technical aspects of the law. I think it is vitally important for attorneys, as professionals, to mentor and to impart their knowledge to younger attorneys in the community, so, I accept this award with great humility and gratitude.”
Patterson has practiced criminal defense law for 30 years, including 12 years with the Putnam County Legal Aid Society and the Dutchess County Public Defender’s Office. He entered private practice in 2018, joining McCabe, Martin, Coleman & Ventosa, PLLC, which is now McCabe, Coleman, Ventosa & Patterson PLLC.
“Steve Patterson has expertly handled some of the Mid-Hudson Valley’s most serious criminal cases,” said New York State Bar Association President Kathleen Sweet. “He is recognized in his community for the highest professional standards and unwavering integrity in serving his clients.”
