Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will add another chapter to their rivalry on Sunday, when they meet in the Mutua Madrid Open final.

Zverev had the upper hand early, winning four of their first five encounters, but the dynamic has shifted dramatically. Sinner has claimed each of their past eight meetings to build a 9-4 Lexus ATP Head2Head lead. Sinner arrives chasing a fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, while Zverev is targeting a third crown in Madrid.

Before their latest showdown in the Spanish capital, ATPTour.com looks back at their nine ATP Tour meetings through video.

Cologne 2020 SF, Zverev d. Sinner 7-6(3), 6-3
Their first ATP Tour meeting came in Cologne in 2020, when top seed Zverev faced 19-year-old wild card Sinner in the semi-finals. In a tight contest featuring eight breaks of serve, Zverev edged through in straight sets before going on to defeat Diego Schwartzman for the title.

Monte-Carlo 2022 QF, Zverev d. Sinner 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(5)
The pair produced a late-night thriller in Monte-Carlo in 2022, battling for more than three hours as daylight faded in the Principality. Zverev eventually came through in a tense deciding-set tie-break to seal victory in a dramatic quarter-final.

Cincinnati 2024 SF, Sinner d. Zverev 7-6(9), 5-7, 7-6(4)
By 2024, their matchups had become synonymous with drama. Sinner earned his first ATP Tour win over Zverev in Cincinnati, prevailing in another three-hour, seven-minute epic. Afterward, the Italian pointed to trusting his “gut feeling” as key in the pivotal moments.

Vienna 2025 F, Sinner d. Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 7-5
In Vienna, both players pushed their physical limits in a gripping final. Locked at 5-5 in the deciding set, Sinner surged through a lung-busting rally to earn a crucial break before serving out victory, levelling their Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 4-4.

Nitto ATP Finals 2025 RR, Sinner d. Zverev 6-4, 6-3

Indian Wells 2026 SF, Sinner d. Zverev 6-2, 6-4
Sinner carried that form into 2026, breaking new ground in Indian Wells. The Italian powered past Zverev in the semi-finals with a sharp, controlled performance, saving the only break point he faced to reach his first final in the desert.

Miami 2026 SF, Sinner d. Zverev 6-3, 7-6(4)
Two weeks later in Miami, the margin was tighter, but the outcome remained the same. Sinner held firm in the key moments to extend his winning streak over Zverev, before going on to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ with victory over Medvedev in the final.

Monte-Carlo 2026 SF, Sinner d. Zverev 6-1, 6-4
Their most recent meeting in Monte-Carlo brought a familiar storyline. For the fourth straight Masters 1000 semi-final between them, Sinner proved too strong, producing another composed performance to advance and continue his remarkable run at the highest level.
