ATLANTA —  The city of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management has issued a boil water advisory for parts of downtown after an internal power failure at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant.

The order applies to areas south of North Avenue, including Vine City, Inman Park, Grant Park, Peoplestown, and Downtown

The advisory was issued out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidance for public notice, officials said. It remains in effect while the department monitors operations and water pressure and waits to complete sampling protocols before it can be lifted.

Residents and property owners who experienced water outages or low water pressure are advised to boil all water before using it for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food or brushing teeth. Officials said the water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute.

Infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems should use extra caution, according to the city. Officials also said people should not drink from public water fountains in the affected area.

The department said it will provide updates as more information becomes available and is directing residents to local news outlets and its social media accounts for the latest information.
