Paula Hurd recognizes donation from co-founder of Microsoft Bill Gates during the dedication of the Mark and Paula Hurd NCR Archive Center, which will preserve many of the historical documents related to NCR.
Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and now a billionaire philanthropist, attended Dayton History’s dedication of the Mark and Paula Hurd NCR Archive Center, a comprehensive corporate archive of what was once one of Dayton’s most influential corporations.
“NCR and Microsoft worked together on a very early project,” Gates said, referencing an early type of data-entry terminal.
Microsoft’s connection with NCR continued in the following decades, including working together on the development of the Windows NT Server at its inception in 1992.
In the 1990s, NCR acquired Teradata, a database analytics software company, after AT&T Corporation acquired NCR. In 1998, Microsoft partnered with NCR Teradata on data warehousing and e-commerce software. NCR and Teradata later separated in the early 2000s.
“I came out to Dayton several times and actually stayed in the Wright brothers’ home on one of those visits,” Gates said.

Gates was one of the donors of the Mark and Paula Hurd NCR Archive Center, which Dayton History held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for on Saturday, May 30. As of February 2026, Gates’ net worth stood at $107.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
Paula Hurd gave the lead gift for the NCR Archive Center in honor of her late husband, Mark, who was a former CEO of NCR Corporation. Prior to becoming president and CEO of the company, Mark Hurd managed the company’s Teradata division. Paula Hurd also worked for NCR Corporation for nearly two decades in sales and service positions.
“In 1979, Microsoft received one of its largest orders from NCR,” Paula Hurd said. “Bill, in kind, made a very generous donation to the center.”
The Mark and Paula Hurd NCR Archive Center will be home to many of the two-dimensional aspects of NCR’s history, including engineering drawings, blueprints, photographs, and NCR corporate records. There is a collection of more than 300 scrapbooks featuring some of those documents.
The Mark and Paula Hurd NCR Archive Center is located in the former Neil’s Heritage House building at 2323 W. Schantz Ave. in Dayton, but it is not currently open to the public.
