Ben Simmons is a champion.

Not in the NBA, mind you, but the South Florida Sails Angling Club—which Simmons has an ownership stake in—won the Walker’s Cay SFC Blue Marlin Open in the Bahamas.

“I have always believed that investing in what you love means you have a responsibility to help move it forward,” Simmons said in a statement back in December, when his ownership stake was announced. “Sportfishing has given me incredible experiences, and SFC is creating a platform that treats offshore fishing like the elite sport it is. … South Florida Sails Angling Club allows me to advocate for the sport, support its athletes, and help take sportfishing to the next level. Inspiring generations of future anglers starts with building a platform they aspire to compete in.”

Simmons, 29, is more famous for his time on the court than his time in the water, of course. He spent nine years in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers and was a three-time All-Star and two-time first-team All-Defensive selection.

During his time with the Sixers he averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game, but his lack of a jumper and his reluctance to attack offensively ultimately was his undoing in Philadelphia.

Injuries then defined his later years, shortening his prime and turning his career into one of his generation’s biggest “what if’s?”

But he’s clearly found a second calling in professional angling.
