SAN DIEGO — will have his sights set on the Phillies’ record book when he takes the mound Wednesday afternoon.

One important note ahead of Sánchez’s attempt to make history: Though he’s only 3 1/3 innings behind Alexander, Sánchez will need to complete four full scoreless innings in order to break the record. If he gets through 3 2/3 scoreless innings and then gives up a two-out run in the fourth, he is credited only with three scoreless innings — not 3 2/3 — as it pertains to the streak.

While Sánchez could break the franchise mark on Wednesday, he still has a ways to go for the all-time record. That belongs to Dodgers legend Orel Hershiser, who went 59 straight innings without allowing a run in 1988.

Sánchez, though, could match Hershiser in another way.

As it stands now, Hershiser is the only pitcher (minimum 30 innings) to go a full calendar month without allowing an earned run. Hershiser, of course, did that as part of that historic streak in 1988, when he rattled off perhaps the greatest six-start stretch in MLB history across the month of September.

Hershiser began the month with five consecutive complete-game shutouts — and the only thing that stopped him from a sixth straight was the Dodgers’ inability to score a run. In his sixth and final September start, Hershiser went 10 scoreless innings in an eventual 16-inning loss. He finished the month with 55 scoreless innings.

Sánchez, meanwhile, will be making his fifth and final start of May against the Padres. Through the first four, he’s tallied 36 strikeouts over 32 innings without allowing a run. He’s just the fourth pitcher since at least 1900 to tally at least 36 strikeouts and 32 scoreless innings over any span of four starts, joining Clayton Kershaw (2014 and ’15), Ray Culp (1968) and Ed Walsh (1910).

Sánchez is also the first pitcher since Kershaw in 2015 to turn in four consecutive scoreless starts of at least seven innings apiece.

He’s the first Phillie to do so since … Alexander in 1911.

So, how has Sánchez fared against current Padres hitters? Let’s just say don’t take Freddy Fermin and his .141 average too lightly …
