In a conversation with ESPN’s Kevin Clark, Minter singled out two second-year defenders as players he expects to make meaningful progress. Mike Green got the nod. So did Malaki Starks.
“I think Mike Green is somebody I’m really excited about that’ll be able to take a big step. I think Malaki Starks is gonna become a household type of name in the secondary.”
That’s not just coach-speak. It’s a window into how Baltimore views its young core. Green’s rookie season came with flashes but also inconsistency. There were moments where his pass-rushing ability popped, followed by stretches where he struggled to hold up against the run. That’s not uncommon for young edge defenders adjusting to the NFL, but it does make Year 2 critical. Minter’s confidence suggests the coaching staff believes a jump is coming. Starks presents a different case. His impact didn’t always show up in highlight packages, but that’s often the nature of the position.

Playing deep safety requires discipline, communication, and the ability to erase mistakes before they become explosive plays. While there were expected rookie growing pains, the foundation is there for something more.
Baltimore doesn’t necessarily need to rebuild its defense. It needs to unlock it. If Green becomes a consistent disruptor and Starks evolves into the stabilizing force Minter envisions, the entire unit changes. Pressure improves. Coverage tightens. Confidence builds. It may be too early to promise breakout seasons, but it’s not too early to recognize when belief inside the building starts to match the potential on the field.
