Toss New Zealand chose to bat vs Bangladesh

New Zealand captain Tom Latham opted to bat first against Bangladesh in the first ODI of their three-match series in Dhaka on Friday morning.

There was a delay in the toss because Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons had to pass on a changed team sheet to captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz. This was later revealed to be Mustafizur Rahman being replaced by Shoriful Islam. It later emerged that the last-minute change was because Mustafizur had picked up a knee injury.

That meant a three-pronged fast-bowling attack of Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana and Shoriful.

New Zealand, meanwhile, are having to play with eight changes since their last ODI, against India in January. Latham only has Henry Nicholls, Will Young and Jayden Lennox from that game. Latham himself is returning to the ODI side after a considerable gap. His last appearance in the format was in November 2025.

This is because the men’s A side is currently in Sri Lanka to play first-class and one-day matches, and there are 18 New Zealand players combined in the IPL and PSL.

Bangladesh: 1 Saif Hassan, 2 Tanzid Hasan, 3 Towhid Hridoy, 4 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 5 Litton Das (wk), 6 Afif Hossain, 7 Mehidy Hasan Miraz (capt), 8 Rishad Hossain, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Shoriful Islam, 11 Nahid Rana

New Zealand: 1 Henry Nicholls, 2 Will Young, 3 Nick Kelly, 4 Dean Foxcroft, Tom Latham (capt, wk), 6 Muhammad Abbas, 7 Josh Clarkson, 8 Nathan Smith, 9 Blair Tickner, 10 Will O’Rourke, 11 Jayden Lennox
