MIAMI — More than a month into the season, the offense Orioles fans had been waiting for finally arrived and it came in a back-and-forth showdown at loanDepot park.
Baltimore snapped its five-game losing streak with a 9-7 win over the Marlins on Tuesday behind a breakout performance from catcher Samuel Basallo, who was a homer shy of the cycle while driving in four runs on a three-hit night.
After several tough games on both sides of the ball, including a sweep at the hands of the Yankees, the Orioles pointed to the work they have put in behind the scenes to reset and get back to enjoying the game. On Tuesday, that preparation showed up Baltimore’s at-bats with the ability to respond throughout the contest vs. the Marlins.
“This is something that we have been working very hard on,” Basallo said in Spanish. “The last few games have been tough, pitching and batting-wise, and we just came in today to give the best of us. And we didn’t get distracted from that to the last out.”
Basallo went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple, with the 21-year-old now slashing .255/.324/.469 on the season.
In the top of the first, Baltimore forced Sandy Alcantara to throw 34 pitches. Gunnar Henderson opened the game with a sharp single, and Dylan Beavers followed one out later with a 12-pitch walk.
Beavers’ plate appearance was crucial, forcing Alcantara to navigate a tough sequence and drive up his pitch count against a third-hole hitter. It set the tone for the inning and made the right-hander work harder than he’s accustomed to, coming into the game with a 3.04 ERA and 31 strikeouts in seven starts.
“They made me work a lot today, throwing 30-something pitches in the first inning,” Alcantara said. “After that inning, I just put in my mind that I’ve got to go deep in the game, maybe to five innings. And I knew they were very aggressive out there today, hitting a lot of foul balls against me.”
That brought up Pete Alonso, who jumped on a slider and drove it into left for a two-run double down the left-field line. A defensive miscue allowed Alonso to move to third, setting up for Basallo. The young catcher wasted no time, lacing a first-pitch fastball a Statcast projected 111.3 mph off the bat into center field for an RBI double.
“It was great energy from the guys all game,” manager Craig Albernaz said. “They played loose. You can tell like they were locked in on every pitch. So it was exactly what we wanted from them now and moving forward.”
In the third, Ward worked a leadoff walk before Alonso delivered his second double of the game. Basallo followed by shooting a changeup back up the middle for a two-run single, pushing the Orioles back in front, 5-3.
Basallo added to his big game in the fifth. After Alonso drew a leadoff walk, Basallo ripped a 109.7 mph ground ball into right-center field and raced around the bases for his first career triple. Basallo later scored on Colton Cowser’s fielder’s choice, chasing Alcantara from the game.
“Thankful to God that I was hitting the ball hard in the first games, and I think we are starting to see the work that I have put in,” Basallo said.
Basallo came up just shy of the cycle, striking out in the seventh before being lifted for pinch-hitter Adley Rutschman, who logged a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth against left-handed reliever Andrew Nardi.
“I thought about [the cycle], but it wasn’t like I was trying to hit a home run. I knew that I was close,” Basallo said. “I totally understood the decision to [take me] out and bat with a righty, and I am just here to support my teammates. We are ultimately here to win a game.”
After Miami tied the game in the eighth, Baltimore answered again.
Leody Taveras followed Rutschman’s single with another base hit to drive in Alonso — who drew a two-out walk earlier in the inning — giving the Orioles a two-run lead.
“The guys coming out today and putting up early runs, and continuing to tack on and be able to just pull out a really gritty win there,” Rutschman said. “I think it means a lot to this group, and especially after the last couple days. So I think everyone’s just proud of the effort that everyone put together today to be able to just complete the team win.”
