Texas Tech softball star Mia Williams can’t seem to escape being hit by pitches.
On Thursday, shortly after Williams stepped to the plate during a WCWS matchup versus Mississippi State, she was plunked by a 51 mph pitch. Bulldogs pitcher Alyssa Faircloth delivered the pitch, which hit Williams in the back at the bottom of the first inning.
Williams walked to the base after being hit and in the next at-bat, Jackie Lis hit a two-run home run to put the Red Raiders in the lead, 2-0, with no outs.
In Williams’ first 61 games, she was only hit by a pitch four times. However, after Thursday’s incident, the Texas Tech star has been hit six times in the last four games. The daughter of former NBA player Jason Williams, Mia transferred this past offseason to play for the Red Raiders after two seasons at Florida, which who Texas Tech faced in the super regional. The Red Raiders’ second baseman was hit by a pitch five times in the series, including one on the first pitch of Game 3 by Florida ace Keagan Rothrock.
In the at-bats where she wasn’t hit by a pitch, Williams went 3-for-7 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored. Speaking to Gainesville, Jason Williams said Florida coach Tim Walton’s ejection in the bottom of the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes was “premeditated,” so he didn’t have to shake hands after the game with his daughter.
