Alex made his Signature Event debut last week at the Cadillac Championship and immediately proved that he’s well within his depth, recording a top 10 finish at Doral. And at this week’s Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, he’s carried that form over.

Through two rounds, Fitzpatrick is T3 at seven-under par. He’s nine shots better than his brother in the same event, and one behind Tour Championship winner Tommy Fleetwood!

Speaking after his second round, Fleetwood spoke about how impressed he’s been with the PGA Tour’s newest member.

Fleetwood has known Alex Fitzpatrick for a number of years and has played on the DP World Tour with him. And when asked about his recent performances, Fleetwood sang the praises of the up-and-coming star.

He said, “Well, it’s great. I think he’s on a great run of form. I think he’s put a lot of great work in. I remember playing back in Europe towards the back end of last year and he was, he had struggled up until that point in the year, and his game was clearly coming back. 

“He had a great finish to the year, he’s continued that on. So his work is paying off. I think it’s an amazing time for him to be playing well, feel confident, have that work paying off for him with great results.

“It just shows, you know, like, wherever you are, if you’re playing good golf and you’re playing to the level you want to play at, you can compete on any given week. So it’s great to see him and Pete doing so well, and it’s a great start to his PGA TOUR career, if you like and, yeah, happy for him.”

Another good result this week and we may start to view him very differently ahead of next week’s PGA Championship.

Where Alex Fitzpatrick has excelled on the PGA Tour

Matt Fitzpatrick said the area where his brother has most improved in recent years is his driving, and that has certainly shown up on the PGA Tour. It’s perhaps the most important area of the game on the tour, and Alex has been exceptional off the tee. 

At Doral, he gained 1.27 strokes to the field off the tee, which was the biggest factor in his top 10 finish. But what also impressed was his ball striking.

He gained 1.06 strokes on approach to the green, showing off his impressive iron play, and that has continued at Quail Hollow. Fitzpatrick currently leads the Truist field in Strokes Gained: Approach, gaining 2.33 to the field.

Fitzpatrick was poor on the greens in round two, ranking in the bottom 20 in putting. If he were even average with his flatstick, he could be leading the tournament.

But he’s set up well for the weekend, as he eyes the top of the leaderboard.
