The Los Angeles Rams have a decision to make at quarterback. The Rams are expected to sign starting quarterback Matthew Stafford to a contract extension. Stafford is coming off an MVP season and helped the Rams make the NFC championship, where they narrowly fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
Behind Stafford, the Rams have not signed anybody. Of course, Los Angeles returns former Georgia Bulldogs national championship quarterback Stetson Bennett, who is entered the final year of his contract. Last season’s backup, Jimmy Garoppolo is a free agent, but the 34-year old is considering retirement.
The Rams are very likely to sign or draft a quarterback before the 2026 NFL season begins. Why find out what Los Angeles does in the 2026 NFL draft. The Rams have the No. 13 pick in the first-round and could target a quarterback as a future successor to Matthew Stafford.
NFL draft expert Todd McShay thinks the Rams will draft Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 pick. Los Angeles would have their quarterback of the future, but could be hurting their current roster’s ability to win in the final years of Stafford’s career.
FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd criticized Stetson Bennett’s ability to start in the future and evaluated the Rams’ quarterback room.
“(Jimmy) Garoppolo may retire,” Cowherd said. “Stetson Bennett’s not it. My take is the way Ty Simpson succeeds in this league is by drafting him and not playing for two years and getting the right coach.”
McShay describes the Rams possibly taking Simpson as a “luxury pick”, but knows the Rams have been interested in Simpson. If the Rams do take Simpson or another rookie quarterback, then they’d compete with Bennett for the starting job behind Stafford.
