Born from a clean-sheet design philosophy, the Cobra Jet 2200 is not an evolution—it’s a reset. 

A New Benchmark in Electric Power

 The headline number—2,200 horsepower—is only part of the story. Compared to the previous Ford Racing Mustang Cobra Jet 1800, the 2200 benefits from a radically rethought chassis and powertrain. The motors themselves weigh roughly half as much as before while producing an additional 600 horsepower. 

At the heart of the system are two custom-built electric motors, paired with highly efficient inverters exceeding 98% efficiency. Each motor/inverter pair delivers roughly 1,200 horsepower, creating a system with world-class power density and minimal energy loss. And it shows. 

Power Application Wins Races 

The Cobra Jet 2200 program wasn’t just about making more power—it was about using it better. Ford engineers focused on one central question: How much energy can we deliver from the battery to the rear tires over the course of a run? The answer led to a simplified architecture:

With a targeted 20-minute charge time, the car fits comfortably within the NHRA’s standard 45-minute turnaround window. That means teams can charge, adjust suspension, and prepare for the next pass without compromise.

One of the most fascinating elements of the Cobra Jet 2200 is something that sounds almost old-school: a centrifugal clutch. It slips only momentarily—barely a rotation—before locking up and allowing the car to operate in direct drive, where efficiency is highest. It’s a hybrid of philosophies, and it works.

Despite the electric platform, the Cobra Jet 2200 retains a multi-speed transmission—because in drag racing, power delivery is everything. Electric motors produce peak power at higher RPM ranges, and without gearing, the car would spend too much of the run outside its optimal power band. The transmission allows the car to stay in its peak performance window, effectively adding over a second of performance potential compared to a single-speed setup. It’s a reminder: even in the electric age, the fundamentals of drag racing still apply. 

Battery Placement and Weight Strategy 

The Cobra Jet 2200 features a sophisticated battery layout: 

 A large underfloor battery pack 

 Dual rear-mounted battery packs 

 A configurable front battery position for weight transfer tuning

This flexibility allows teams to adjust weight distribution depending on track conditions and tire choice—critical in a sport where traction is everything.

Ford also introduced a new safety system: a pyrotechnic circuit breaker. In the event of an emergency, track personnel—or the driver—can instantly disable the high-voltage system by triggering a small explosive charge that severs the electrical connection. It’s fast, reliable, and designed with NHRA safety protocols in mind.
