Get ready, riders: The long-gestating “Fourth Wing” TV adaptation has been ordered to series at Amazon‘s Prime Video.

Based on the best-selling “The Empyrean” romantasy book series from author Rebecca Yarros, “Fourth Wing” is set inside the brutal world of Basgiath War College, where there is only one rule: graduate or die. Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was always expected to live a quiet life — but she’s sent on an entirely different path when her mother, a general in the military, orders her to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become dragon riders, the elite of Navarre.

Yarros’ “The Empyrean” book series began with the release of New York Times best-seller “Fourth Wing” in May 2023, followed by sequel “Iron Flame” in November 2023 and third book “Onyx Storm” in January 2025. The titles and release dates for the planned fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced.

“Fourth Wing” executive producer Michael B. Jordan announced the series pickup at the end of Amazon’s upfront presentation to TV advertisers at the Beacon Theatre on Monday.

Jordan didn’t have much he could say just yet, only that after acquiring the rights and bringing the project into development at Amazon MGM Studios, his Outlier Society production company and the studio needed to find the right team to take Yarros’ romantasy book series to TV. That group includes Yarros herself, as well as HBO’s “Westworld” co-creator Lisa Joy (who is an executive producer and will direct the first episode of “Fourth Wing”) and showrunner Meredith Averill (who co-created Netflix’s “Locke & Key”).

Additional executive producers include Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo, as well as Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark are executive producing for Premeditated Productions, the sister company to “Fourth Wing” publisher Entangled Publishing. Outlier Society executive vice president of TV, Stefano Agosto, will co-executive produce.

First put into development in October 2023, the “Fourth Wing” TV series was stalled until last September, when Averill joined as showrunner following the exit of Moira Walley-Beckett (“Anne With an E” creator and “Breaking Bad” writer), who had signed on as the project’s original showrunner in the summer of 2024.

“I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them,” said Yarros.

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.

Yarros is represented by Louise Fury from The Fury Agency, Matthew N. Sugarman from Weintraub Tobin, and Shivani Doraiswami at Untitled Entertainment.
