It’s been a few months since the release of League of Legends‘ highly divisive WASD mapping. This invited players to play it with a more traditional gaming control scheme, using WASD to move around the world and only using the mouse for attacks, rather than the classic mouse for movement.
This was divisive at the announcement, as players were claiming that WASD would have a far superior movement scheme because of the ease of dodging with it. Others argued that classic would remain dominant due to the omnidirectional input, unlike the eight-directional limit that WASD has.
It’s been a long time since the release, as WASD launched on official servers, releasing over four months ago on the 6th of December 2025. At the time, it was a highly controlled release, only allowing it for casual modes, before LP was on the line, and players would be practising in the ranked matches of others.

Now, as of the latest Dev Update, the team has announced that WASD is live on Ranked queues now, starting on the 15th of April 2026. This means that players who have been enjoying playing with WASD and have been avoiding Ranked to use their preferred scheme can now enjoy the climb.
This is the official conclusion of the turbulent WASD times, as this marks the time when WASD and point-and-click modes are close enough in terms of winrate and win chance that they can be rolled out competitively. Classic controls still have a small edge, but the team is hoping that this will be smoothed out as players get more accustomed to the WASD control scheme and overwrite years of muscle memory with classic.
