AEP Texas reported an overnight power outage in Tom Green County that affected hundreds of customers in San Angelo, with service later restored in some areas
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Update Tuesday May 19, 12:25 p.m.:
Power outages in the area were traced back to equipment failure at the South San Angelo substation. According to AEP, crews initially believed the issue stemmed from a transmission line, but a detailed inspection found no damage there.
As teams worked to restore service, a breaker at the substation failed completely, helping crews identify the exact source of the problem. Workers quickly rerouted power away from the faulty equipment and replaced the breaker, restoring electricity to all affected customers.
Parts of San Angelo lost power overnight after American Electric Power Texas issued an outage alert for Tom Green County.
According to a post shared by the city, the outage affected areas including Capital Heights, Santa Rita and South Chadbourne Street, along with nearby neighborhoods.
At one point, the outage impacted more than 670 customers, with AEP Texas listing the cause as unknown. The utility initially estimated restoration around 3:30 a.m.
Service has since been restored in some areas, though it is unclear whether all customers were back online at the same time.
The outage map showed a concentrated area of impact in central and south San Angelo, where crews were working to restore service through the night.
No additional details were immediately released about what caused the outage.
